How do I Build a Relationship with God
How do I build a relationship with God? You may be asking yourself that question and wondering what to do about it, pondering over whether it’s a spiritual thing, a Bible thing or a church thing?! Starting a journey of faith can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming. Whether you’re new to Christianity or exploring what it means to simply believe in something, developing a personal relationship with God is a deeply heart-opening path.
This blog post explores simple and practical ways to nurture and strengthen your connection with the creator of life. Let’s begin!

1. Start with the Basics: Understanding What Faith Means
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7. This is where we start my friend, it starts with faith. It starts with choosing to have faith, even when we can’t see the end result. A bit of a tricky one hey? We all like to have the result and see the fruits of our labour, but it doesn’t work that way, and it’s an even trickier one to grasp when our modern culture has become fixated on instant gratification.
Choosing a life of faith means taking a stand away from the worldly ways. We have to make a bold statement to stand with God and choose to place Christ in our lives so that we can live in faith.
Choosing faith does not mean you have the answers, you just won’t have it all figured out. You can’t expect to have the exact plan for the outcome. Faith is about opening your heart to Christ and putting God first place in everything, and I mean everything, you do.
When beginning a life of faith, it might look something like a willingness to learn and being open-hearted to change. You don’t need to be perfect or have everything figured out, the most important step is the step of faith.

2. Prayer: A Simple Conversation
I love prayer, it has become a daily spiritual practice that has guided me in my walk with God and in becoming a Christian in my 30’s. Praying was the first step to bring me from my wild, foolish ways and to get me believing in God, taking those baby steps to trust in God, our divine creator.
Praying is nothing fancy, it doesn’t need to be anything set or following a particular written prayer, it can be anything in conversation with God. Prayer is simply talking to God. When you are new to a life of faith it can feel overwhelming at first to start praying, but once you get started it will become easier and more natural to talk to God
Your prayers can be:
- Honest and raw – expressing your real thoughts and feelings
- Gratitude-focused – thanking God for what you have
- Request-based – asking for help, guidance, or healing
- Quiet reflection – sitting in silence and listening for God’s voice
- Loved ones – praying for others
- Simple conversation – just have a chat with God, see what comes up from your heart
Start with one prayer a day for a few minutes. No set formula, just you and God. Find a quiet place where you can speak from your heart without distractions. If you have children, then it is best to get used to praying when they are in bed or during a quiet time so you can focus. The more you get used to praying, the more you might get comfortable with others around you. I now do prayers on my own in quiet and with my children around.

3. Find Your Community
One of the most powerful ways to grow in faith is to connect with others who share your beliefs. You don’t have to walk this path alone; community plays an important role in spiritual growth. I have found great strength in fellowship with my local church. I have attended church for a number of years since becoming a Christian, but I found the greatest strength when joining my local church who have a great community loving on each other.
Consider:
- Local church: Visiting a local church where you can worship with others and ask questions.
- Small groups: Joining small group meetings, prayer meetings and/or Bible studies.
- Christian mentor: Finding a pastor or Christian mentor who can walk alongside you as you explore your faith.
- Building relationships: This is at the core of being a Christian – loving one another. Connect with others who share your faith.
A supportive community provides encouragement, accountability, and practical guidance as you navigate your Christianity and learn what it means to be in Christ with fellow believers.
4. Read and Reflect on Scripture
The Bible is central to Christianity, but it can feel intimidating for beginners, I mean, look at the size of it. I was certainly overwhelmed at the beginning, however, I kept being encouraged to read it and started the Gospel. After reading the four books of the Gospel, I started at the beginning of the Bible to work my way through it. As well as working through the Bible, I do dip into other verses for various reasons such as encouragement, wisdom or help in a specific area of my life.
Here are tips to get started with the Bible:
- Read daily: Even a few verses a day can provide guidance and inspiration.
- Study deeply: Don’t just read passively – reflect on what passages mean in your life. Look at it with Christ in mind, where is Jesus in this verse? Who is this verse about? What can I learn from this scripture?
- Join a study group: Discussing scripture with others offers new perspectives and strengthens the relationships in church fellowship.
- Begin with the New Testament: Start with the Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) to learn about Jesus’ life and teachings.
- Read slowly and reflect: It’s not about rushing through; quality matters more than quantity, don’t simply rush through to finish the Bible.
- Make notes: Write down questions and insights as they come to you.
- Highlight verses: I was scared of this at first, but highlight or mark verses that stand out to you…it’s ok to write in your Bible!

5. Be Patient and Gracious with Yourself
Building a relationship with God takes time, like any relationship. Some days your faith will feel strong; other days you might doubt or struggle. This is completely normal and doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. Faith is a part of life and not something to complete and tick off your list. Be gentle and gracious to yourself as you build that relationship with God, our Heavenly Father.
- Don’t judge yourself harshly: A life of faith has its ups and downs.
- Seek guidance when needed: Talk to a pastor, trusted friend or leader in your church.
- Trust the process: Building a relationship takes time, give yourself grace as you walk this path with God.
Remember that God’s love and grace are constant, even when your feelings fluctuate. Heavenly Father loves you and allowing yourself to live a life in that love is one of the biggest steps to a life of faith. Give yourself to the Lord and learn what it means to truly surrender and trust in our almighty God.

6. Let Your Life Reflect Your Faith
As your relationship with God deepens, you’ll naturally want to live in alignment with your beliefs. You might find that you want to change some of your old ways of doing things and become tuned into the spirit of God, putting the Lord at the centre of all that you do. This might mean:
- Practice compassion: Serving others with compassion, kindness and respect.
- Honesty: Being honest and ethical in your daily dealings.
- Forgiveness: Forgiving others as you’ve been forgiven.
- Serve others: Volunteer, help those in need, and contribute to your church and local community.
What would it look like for you to live your life based on your faith? Take time to be still, get quiet and pray about the ways you can reshape your life to honour God and live a wholesome life rooted in Christ.
7. Seek Help When You Need It
This is an important one, and quite honestly, one I have struggled with for many years. I know to turn to God in prayer, read the Bible and seek guidance in Jesus’ teachings, but to actually put my heart out to others in person, is quite a tricky one, and one I am slowly learning to do. That being said, just know that you are not the only one who struggles to open your heart to others.
But let me tell you this my friend, there is great strength in opening our hearts to others. Leaning on others in the good and the bad, seeking wise counsel from friends, family, church family, a pastor or other leader in the church.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to your church community, pastor, or other trusted friend when you have questions or struggle with doubts. These challenges are opportunities for deeper understanding and growth as you walk a life in Christ.
8. Cultivate Gratitude and Reflection
Building a relationship with God involves recognising blessings in your life and developing awareness of the divine blessings from our Lord. I find this one quite an easy thing to do daily, every day I write down five things I am grateful for, I spend time reflecting on the blessings in my life and I find great comfort in doing this every day.
- Keep a journal: Write down things you’re thankful for daily.
- Be still: Quiet your mind to listen for spiritual insights and tune into God’s spirit within.
- Pause and observe: Notice moments of beauty, kindness, and grace throughout your day. Nature is a beautiful place to start with doing this practice.
These practices help you see God’s work in everyday life. It’s so important to tune into all that God is doing every day so that when we face a challenging time, we can get through it with all the gratitude we have built into our lives over time.

Final Thoughts
When you are looking to build a relationship with God, be sure to keep it simple and focused purely on God. Do not overcomplicate it with yearly Bible studies, which church to attend and how to make solid Christian friendships. Yes, those things are important and can be a huge part of helping you in your Christian life, but let’s just get started first.
Bring it back to what matters: our divine creator, our Heavenly Father, our Lord, our one God.
