Book Review – Not Just a Mother: What You Need to Know
If you have felt the pull to deepen your relationship with your children, yourself, and God, then the book Not Just a Mother by Sinsimilla Osei may be a new favourite for you to curl up with whilst relaxing (you know, for 5 minutes mamas!)
This book by the author Sinsimilla focuses on how God uses parenthood as kingdom purpose, and quite rightly so, she has pulled me to the centre of this truth as I dove headfirst into her deeply honest account of her life.
Before going any further into the book review, to give a heads up: buy it. Read it. Absorb it. It’s like having a good heart-opening chat with your dearest friend and realising (or reminding yourself) that you’re not alone in your struggles, and we all go through challenges to be faced.

Who is the Author?

Not Just a Mother Highlights
Key Takeaway
Not Just a Mother is a short book that dives deep into the heart opening truth of a Christian mum who puts God in the centre of her life, even when life is challenging in all its complexities. An honest account of a mother with a heart for spirit-led truth.

Why should you listen to me?
I’m a Christian stay-at-home homeschooling homemaker mum. I answered the call to be a mum and raise my family from the get-go. I knew instantly and instinctively that this was my calling, and nothing has deterred me since.
I know that in my heart and spirit, God called me to be a mother, raise, and home educate my children. Being at home for my family is the greatest gift, and I know that deep in my soul I am doing the best job I can possibly do (even when I make mistakes and struggle in the toddler moments!)

When Sinsimilla reached out to me about her book, I knew it was a huge YES to collaborate. Reading her words jumps out to me, and I feel I already know her even though we have never met in person.
As I have read the book, I have found healing, understanding and truth whilst feeling like I am having good, deep conversations with a dear friend. I will be treasuring this book and referring to it often for beautiful reminders on this real and raw journey of motherhood.

Feature 1: Real, Raw and Honest
The one thing that stood out from the get-go of this book is how real, raw and honest Sinsimilla portrays her desires before being a mother and becoming a mother. I love her honesty as she dives deep into her soul and shares the pain she felt when wanting to become a mother.
“The word of God became my food which in turn sharpened my prayer life.”
As she goes further into the journey alongside God, her heart-opening and heart-wrenching tale brings so much depth and truth to human emotions and how we all face challenges in our own unique ways. I like that it feels so human, so real and alive, which I believe is important in this modern culture of technology taking over the world (so it feels like anyway!)
Feature 2: Biblical Based
What I love about Not Just a Mother is how there is a lot of scripture throughout the book. I would expect there to be scripture in a Christian book, and this did not disappoint, as there is a good flow of the Bible from beginning to end.
I feel very connected to Sinsimilla in her walk with God and using scripture to relate to her personal challenges and journey in motherhood. On a personal level, it has helped strengthen my walk with faith by relating specific scripture to my own personal circumstances.
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." - 2 Corinthians 12:9
Feature 3: Honouring Your Calling
The title of the book gives it away – Not Just a Mother. As you may have guessed, this book is based on being a mother, and yet, it goes deeper than that role as a mother. Are you allowing yourself to listen within? To honour that deep desire that tells you to follow a certain path? To honour that God given calling?
Sinsimilla beautifully displays how she answered that call and takes us on her path as she dives deep into her soul to stay true to her calling, even when she was struggling to get pregnant. Now, as a mother of four, it shows that you have to listen to that calling and be obedient to what God is calling you to do, even when it might be taking longer than you’d like it to or is a slightly different path.
“Maybe you, too, have sat with a silent ache in your heart.”
“I woke up lighter. Not completely free of emotion, but deeply at peace.”
“I decided I was going to stand on the word of God.”
Wow. So honest, so open and with such truth in her spirit. I love it when others know who they are and choose to walk that path of faith, even when it is so so so difficult at times when faced with adversity.
I am a strong character, I have faced many challenges in life, and yet here I am, facing life with faith, my beautiful family and the knowing that I am doing the right thing, raising my family at home, even when it goes against the grain of modern western culture.
